I thoroughly enjoyed working in garage band to produce my Exquisite Corpse Soundscape project. Most of my prior art experience has been visual, so when I first indulged in garage band, I was a bit skeptical, but reflecting on it now, this project has been extremely impactful on me. I was able to create connections and express my emotions in a totally different manner than I was originally used to. I actively reminded myself to avoid making my sound experience a song and really focus on connecting sounds. Once I was able to think more abstractly, I found it extremely desirable and pleasing to mash a bunch of everyday sounds into something greater. I was able to tell a story and put images in people’s minds, joist through a sound presentation. I plan to continue to play and express myself through sounds.

Music is the accumulation of reverberated sounds to create one uniform piece. I find music to be calming, allowing the listener to go on a spiritual strip through the producer’s mind. Most times I indulge in music listening, I’m more occupied with another task that I tend to tune out the music. Despite the fact that I like “tuning” out music, I feel it is essential to society, whether it’s in place to break up awkwardness, or put individuals in the right mindset. While in a social environment, music or just sounds will put the crowd in a certain place as they follow the sound experience. For example, when I go on runs, I tend to listen to crazy dubstep music with lots of bass drops and gnarly sound effects. This is perfect for getting me hyped up to push myself to new limits. On the contrast, when I’m out in nature, biking, hiking or skiing, I tend to not listen to traditional music, instead I listen to the environment around me, allowing nature to guide my mind. This is definitely ideal, as the balance between the waterfall, chirping birds and swaying trees create a sound of their own, that can be classified as meditation. Meditation in many occasions are much more ideal than listening to a produced sound. Sounds are a beautiful thing, every noise is unique in their own way, and once sounds are mashed together it can create something much larger than its own.
